Writing Lab / Studio Policies
Appointment scheduling
- Students may have up to two (2) appointments per week.
- Appointments are 50 minutes long, beginning on the hour and ending 10 minutes before the hour. If you arrive late, the appointment still ends 10 minutes before the hour.
- If you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, the counselor may take a walk-in appointment, in which case you will have to reschedule.
- Appointments should be cancelled with 24 hours notice.
Writing Lab sessions
- Our counselors help students improve their writing skills. Counselors do not proofread or edit students' papers, but help students learn how to improve their writing themselves.
- Students who frequently fail to show up for appointments or persist in cancelling appointments at the last minute may have their privileges restricted.
- Please bring a copy of your assignment instructions to your appointment.
- If your paper / assignment is longer than 5-8 pages, expect that you will need to make multiple appointments to work on it and plan ahead to do so.
- You must complete an interview with the Writing Lab counselor at your first appointment.
- If you are working on a take-home exam, you must bring your professor's permission in writing to your appointment.
- If you are working on a cover letter or resume, please make an appointment with the Career Center.
- If you are working on a dissertation or another lengthy project, please consult your academic department for assistance.
- Assistance with business writing is available at the Kogod School of Business.
